Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on.  I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com

Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

The Fetish Crowd

THE FETISH CROWD:

Ian Le Geyt – lead guitar/vocals

John Hughes – rhythm guitar/vocals

Colin ? – bass/vocals

Tony Richard – drums/vocals

Thanks to Tony Richard, I have the following information about the band but would welcome further insights.

The Fetish Crowd were formed in St Helier, Jersey and were resident band at the Springfield Ballroom. During the summer of 1964, the musicians supported The Rolling Stones, Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas, The Merseybeats, The Swinging Blue Jeans, Gerry & The Pacemakers and The Hollies at the venue.

They soon headed for London and worked at the Crawdaddy in Richmond, the Ricky Tick and the Ad Lib Club in Leicester Square. Richard says that The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were in the audience but did not say which venue(s).

The quartet did some recordings at Abbey Road and then opened for The Nashville Teens and The Small Faces on a showcase gig (possibly in Bournemouth, Dorset), which was promoted by Don Arden. Richard says that Arden signed both The Fetish Crowd and The Small Faces but soon forgot about his group.

Richard also remembers the band played at the Ram Jam in Brixton and the Scots of St James in Mayfair. One notable gig was opening for The Graham Bond Organisation at the Fishmongers Arms on Turnpike Lane in North London. He also says that the band shared a double bill with The Who at the Ealing Club on 26 April but didn’t specify which year.

Richard later formed a band called The Diversions, which later recorded “Fatty Boom Boom” after being introduced to the song by Pete Townsend following a trip to Jamaica. Richard subsequently went into record producing.

1965:

The Penetrators from Crown Point, NY

Penetrators Ferus 45 I'll Make You MineThe Penetrators came from Crown Point, NY, on the west shore of Lake Champlain above Ticonderoga.

Members included Dan Rabideau and Larry Rabideau, Kim Joiner and Joe Dugan on bass. John Hoffman seems to have been a later member of the group.

In March of 1968 they made their first record, the cool garage original “I’ll Make You Mine” by Dan Rabideau and Kim Joiner, backed with a good instrumental, “Splitter Splatter” by Dan Rabideau and Larry Rabideau.

The 45 came out on Ferus Records FR 4958. Ferus had an address of 64-12 60th Pl., Brooklyn 27, New York. Tommy Wilde produced the single, I’m not sure how the band came to find Ferus.

Danny and the Penetrators Ticonderoga Sentinel 1971
1971 Battle of the Bands
This is a styrene 45 with the Columbia custom pressing code ZTSP 124958/9. Both songs published by Ferus Music BMI.

As Danny and the Country Penetrators they put out a single that I haven’t heard, “She’s My Mother-In-Law” / “I’ll Be Waiting” on Delta Records in June of 1968.

The band was well known locally as as Danny and the Penetrators. They appeared on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour and continued with local bookings into the 1970s.

From a 1971 news item, it appears the Rabideau’s mother Doris managed the band.

Info on the band from a Port Henry forum. Thank you to Anthony M. for the original 45.

I’ll be selling records including some local singles (but not this one!) at the Albany Record Riot this Saturday, October 28, 2017. Click for more info.

Anyone have a photo of the group?

THE MACABRE:

Thanks to Peter Vernon-Kell and Chris Downing, I have been able to piece a bit of information together on this West London band, who apparently opened for The Who regularly on Friday nights at the Goldhawk Social Club. Incidentally, Vernon-Kell was an old friend of The Who’s, having been a brief member of its predecessor, The Detours. Ed Hamilton had previously worked with The Crescents with Harvey Hinsley. I would welcome any reader insights.

Peter Vernon-Kell – guitar/vocals

Ed Hamilton – guitar/vocals

Chris Downing – guitar/vocals

Carl Broadbent – drums

Downing recalls that he worked with the band for six to eight months (more likely to have been a year). Ed Hamilton, who Downing replaced and who succeeded him around July 1965 when the guitarist moved on, had left The Macabre around July 1964 to later work with Mike Berry & The Outlaws.

Downing remembers that The Macabre featured several bass players during his time with the group.

He also recalls that The Macabre opened for The Who and The Spencer Davis Group in Watford. On a separate occasion, they also played with The Rockin’ Berries in Watford.

Other dates that he recalls are a gig with The Who at Woolwich Town Hall (more likely to have been Greenwich Town Hall on 24 June 1965), several shows with Tony Rivers & The Castaways and a show with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in Forest Gate.

The band played regularly at the Goldhawk Social Club, which apparently only hosted bands on Fridays and Saturdays. Downing says that they supported The Groundhogs there, including one show where Jimmy Reed guested with The Groundhogs.

The guitarist also remembers The Macabre shared a billing with The Who (actually it was as The High Numbers) on the evening when Roger Daltry’s father-in-law turned up and fight broke up between them (Ed – this was Railway Hotel in Harrow on 11 August 1964).

When the band broke up, Peter Vernon-Kell became a member of the group that became The Hamilton Movement.

John Salisbury, Andy Allsup, Stuart Mead, Bobby Gee and Peter Buckner

MISTON-TUAC:

I have the following list of musicians who were members but have no further information about the band’s history and would welcome readers’ insights.

Barry Allmark – lead vocals

Andy Allsup – lead/rhythm guitar

Joe ? – rhythm

Phil ? – bass

John Roberts – drums (real name: John Salisbury)

Peter Buckner – bass

Stuart Mead – lead/rhythm guitar

Bobby Gee – lead vocals

Andrew Perry – drums

The band’s manager Roy Harris, who had left a message on the Ealing Club entry, and has since been in touch, said that they were a Hounslow band, which was confirmed by Peter Buckner, who added that they may have rehearsed in the Lord Palmerston.

According to the message that drummer John Salisbury left on the Ealing Club entry, the band’s original lead singer Bobby Gee died in France in a road accident. Former Downliner’s Sect member Barry Allmark came in as his replacement. However, Roy Harris says that it was the other way round; Bobby Gee replaced Barry Allmark.

Peter Buckner confirms that the line-up he worked with was Bobby Gee, Andy Allsup, Stuart Mead and John Salisbury.

At some point, John Salisbury (who worked under the name John Roberts) left and Andrew Perry joined on drums.

According to Roy Harris, another group billed as Mistral-Tuac appeared on the scene but bore no relation to this band. However, I’ve listed any gigs I have found by this band below.

The Continentals and Tortoise Records

Continentals Tortoise 45 Rufus RastasThe Continentals cut two fratty originals, “Rufus Rastas” / “Donna” on Tortoise Records. I found a copy with an inscription on the “Rufus Rastas” label “First copy to Jim McKee, Oct. 12, 1965 … Joe Doll, President, Tortoise Records”.

I wrote to Mr. Doll and he while he didn’t recall Jim McKee, he replied,

I was president (and janitor, too!) of Tortoise Records. I began college at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio in 1963, then transferred to U. of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1966 to complete my Electrical Engineering degree.

I most likely met the Continentals when they were entertaining at one of the numerous fraternity/sorority parties in Delaware. Too bad, I have no recollection or documentation of the band members. I do remember the general parameters of the recording session with The Continentals, at the WSLN studios in Delaware, OH, north of Columbus. I also remember thinking at the time that their “Rufus Rastas” made a pretty good side. I don’t think we did a test pressing, so what you found was probably the top copy in the shipment from the pressing factory.

When it was over, they departed with their box of pressings and we had no further contact.

Tortoise Records was named for the very first band on the label, the Turtles, with their “Pungfoo Watusi” from 1964:

“Pungfoo Watusi” was the not-very-carefully-conceived B side of “Pungfoo”. It was the first record I produced.

“Pungfoo” originated with me and some fraternity brothers fooling around with a piano, sax, and drum set in the parlor of our fraternity house. We whimsically called ourselves Tuggy and the Turtles. The original title and lyric was “Fungu”. It was a made-up word, but someone thought that meant something bad in another language. One unreleased recording is “Fungu” recorded on cheap equipment in the fraternity house.

The record was taped at Fortune Studios in Detroit. I played piano, whistled, and hollered into some sort of trash can. Jim Guiness played saxophone. Our usual drummer, “Tuggy,” could not make it, so we picked up a drummer in Detroit. That’s why the group name is just The Turtles. A couple others assisted with clapping, which I believe we overdubbed.

I had done some work for the [Fortune] studio the previous summer, and they allowed me to use it without charge. I didn’t do a lot of work there, just came in to help them adjust and maintain their equipment from time to time.

Frank Uhle, who took on the project to do a 50th Anniversary re-release of the Beau Biens record, at one time contemplated a vinyl album that would contain some unreleased material. I have about a half hour of covers recorded by the Mark V, a pretty good rock band that played fraternity/sorority parties at Ohio Wesleyan.  I recorded them in the WSLN studios, like the Continentals. There was an outfit called the Crystal Set Radio Band for whom I taped several tunes, originals I believe, in the WCBN studios. Ken Phillips, a U of M student, recorded with a small group a couple of tunes he had written and had them pressed as a demo record.

Joe Doll would become a DJ at WCBN at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he would record the Aftermath and the Beau Biens on Malibu Records. For more info please look at Joe’s website.

Tortoise Records discography:

Tortoise T 64001 – Turtles “Pungfoo” / “Pungfoo Watusi” (both by Joe Doll)

Tortoise T-65001 – Continentals – “Rufus Rastas” / “Donna”

Tortoise T-66003 – Aftermath – “Messing With the Kid” / “Bury My Body” (Campbell, Connelly)

Malibu MB-67001 – Beaubiens (aka Beau Biens) – “Times Passed” (arr. by Salvo & Palazzolo) / “A Man Who’s Lost” (both by Kleene & Tapert, Linnoah Music BMI, produced by Joe Doll)

A special thank you to Joe Doll for his help answering my questions and allowing me to quote him.
